Woah, November
17 November 2008 (Life: , , )

Saturday night, my downstairs neighbors Laurel and Whitney hosted a small, mostly-acoustic concert in our parking garage out back. Mauled wine, rugs and blankets on the ground, a mini-stage (that almost got them evicted), some Christmas lights, and about 30 people in the audience at any given point. It was so fun, and all of the artists were incredible. I hope we get a chance to do it again!

Artists:
Yee Chen, Kyoto Protocol, Rough Cuts, Anahita/Milafana, Forest Animal Index, Get In More Fights, Veronica Bianchi.

(My Elysian field), sort of
14 November 2008 (Work: , , , )

For a 158 assignment we had to create an “Elysian field” – a place where heroes and victors go to rest (die). The catches were that the field had to be confined in a covered shoebox; the contents needed to be viewed through a peephole; and the box had to be lit somehow (naturally or otherwise).

I viewed the Elysian field to be more of a state of mind than an actual place; where one would get some kind of affirmation that whatever change had come across the viewer (like dying), regardless of whether it was expected or accidental, was supposed to happen. If you wore shoes instead of sneakers today, you were supposed to. If you trip on the street, you were supposed to. If you die, it was your time. It was worth it, whatever “it” was. That’s what I would want in my Elysian field.

It was really hard getting the damn thing to light up. I wanted it to be dim enough that it took a couple seconds to see the word, but adequately lit so you could actually see it (which you could not). Bob liked the idea, saying that the technical flaws probably could be overcome more easily in an installation setting. Yay. So maybe I’ll think about scaling it up, and maybe even submitting it to the UG show. OMG!

ALSO!!! Unrelated but “solace” is pronounced saul-iss, not soul-iss. Well, at least Dictionary.com says so, and so does the OED. I don’t really consider myself a language purist anymore, but this kind of misinformed mispronunciation … I gotta admit it bothers me a bit. I heard it wasn’t even that good a movie! :(
